Big changes at the Wells Hotel – and an incredible winter deal!
“We’re going into 2004 better than ever,” says Heather Hartridge, the hotel’s manager. “We’re likely the finest place in the region for a romantic escape or family weekend now, and we’re an exceptional location for a business retreat, too.” The Hotel is a thirteen room heritage country inn completed in 1934. Current owners purchased it in 1996, and conducted a major renovation at that time. The 2003 improvements were at least as extensive. Every room now has a bath, some rooms have expanded, every window has been replaced with energy-efficient (and quiet) units, all linens and many beds and furniture have been replaced, and the building has been repainted and touched up from top to bottom, inside and out. “For the piece of mind of some guests, we’ve even created a secure lock-up for snowmobiles, ATVs and other large valuables,” says Hartridge. “That’s something that no other facility in our region has, to our knowledge.” Hartridge says that a brand new roof-top hot tub is being installed shortly, to top it off. “The views from the tub are wonderful!” A hot tub is especially good news for people visiting the area in the winter. Wells already has 4 feet of snow in the valley, and much more in the mountains, and you’ll be in need of some muscle relaxation after snowmobiling or skiing all day! Also, the hotel is home base for Troll Ski Resort, only 20 minutes away. One of the best advances is in the kitchen, where Sandi Forbes now presides. Sandi is delivering excellent meals for Pooley Street Café, the hotel’s restaurant, as well as the hotel’s little country pub.
The Wells Hotel is open any time for groups, and every Friday-Sunday all winter except the weekend following Christmas. And speaking of Christmas, the hotel is booking parties again this year, and the famous Victorian Christmas is on in Barkerville on the Dec. 12 and Dec. 19 weekends.
